Progressive Mutual Insurance Company began selling auto insurance in 1937. Today, Progressive offers coverage for drivers, as well as home and property insurance, commercial insurance, and a wide array of personal insurance, such as life, pet, and travel policies.

Pros:

Progressive is rated No. 8 on our list of the Best Car Insurance Companies of 2022, and many drivers may be able to find better coverage elsewhere. Its premiums are just slightly lower than the national average, and the company fared poorly among survey participants when it comes to factors including customer service and claims handling. In fact, it is rated last among those polled for customer loyalty. Progressive does offer some of the lowest rates for drivers with a DUI but has the highest rates for teen drivers.

Progressive Customer Service

Progressive holds the No. 7 spot in our survey for customer service. When asked if they were completely satisfied with how easy it was to open an auto policy with Progressive, approximately 53% of respondents said yes. Regarding the ease of contacting Progressive’s customer service, 41% said they were completely satisfied, while 43% said they were completely satisfied with the quality of service provided.

Progressive Claims Handling

Our survey data shows Progressive ranked No. 8 for handling claims. Nearly 45% of respondents were completely satisfied with how easy it was to file a claim with Progressive, and 40% said they were completely satisfied with the status updates they received. About 43% of respondents said they were completely satisfied with how their claims were resolved by Progressive.

Progressive Customer Loyalty

Progressive places last among the 10 car insurance companies in our survey for customer loyalty. Just 33% of those polled said they were very likely to recommend Progressive to someone looking for car insurance. Among those who have filed a claim, only 30% said they were very likely to do so. About 43% of respondents said they were very likely to renew their policy, while 41% of people who have filed a claim said they were very likely to renew.

A sample car insurance policy from Progressive costs $1,533, which is just $6 less than the national average. Compared with the other insurers in our list of the Best Car Insurance Companies of 2022, Progressive’s rates are generally in the middle of the pack across the demographic groups we looked at. When looking at average rates by state, Progressive does have the cheapest rates for California and New York drivers on average, but their rates for teen drivers are very high.

    Progressive vs. Travelers

    Progressive’s national average rates are more than $150 higher than Travelers’ rates, and its premiums also are pricier than Travelers across all driver demographics. Neither company earns particularly high survey scores for customer satisfaction, with Progressive at No. 7 and Travelers at No. 8. But Travelers ranks higher for customer loyalty, with Travelers at No. 4 and Progressive dead last at No. 10.     Progressive vs. AAA

    Our study data shows Progressive’s national average rates are nearly $900 less than those with AAA. In fact, with the exception of rates for teen drivers, Progressive’s rates are lower than AAA’s rates in every driver category. Both Progressive and AAA earn poor marks in our survey for customer service, claims handling, and customer loyalty, scoring below average in each category. Progressive does slightly better for customer service and claims handling, according to survey results, but AAA is marginally better for customer loyalty.
