The Avocado Green Mattress places No. 2 in our rating of Best Organic Mattresses of 2022 and Best Latex Mattresses of 2022. It also ranks No. 4 in Best Hybrid Mattresses, No. 7 in Best Online Mattresses, and No. 8 in Best Mattresses of 2022 overall. Our unbiased Avocado Green mattress review explains why it earns such high marks.

Avocado was founded in 2016 to create a truly organic mattress at an affordable price. The Avocado Green Mattress is best for:

  • Back and combination sleepers

  • Hot sleepers that need help with temperature regulation

  • People looking for an organic mattress

The Avocado Green Mattress is not recommended for:

  • Sleepers who like to “sink in” to their mattress

  • Strict side sleepers

  • People who like a really plush feel

The Avocado Green Mattress is Avocado’s flagship model. It’s a hybrid mattress that’s constructed of three main layers – two outer layers of organic Dunlop latex with a support layer of 1,414 pocketed coils in the middle. This hybrid construction makes it feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress rather than sinking into it, according to professional reviewers.

The Dunlop latex is more responsive than traditional memory foam, so it can quickly bounce back and reconform to your body after movement, making this mattress a good choice for combination sleepers. It also has enhanced support thanks to ergonomic zones in the coils that provide extra relief for pressure points like the shoulders, back, and hips. Professional reviewers say the coils help distribute weight evenly but they will also make it bouncier than memory foam-only beds, which could be a problem for light sleepers or people who sleep with a partner.

The Avocado Green Mattress is rated a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale, which means it has a medium-firm feel. This makes it a good option for back and combination sleepers, but side sleepers and lightweight sleepers might find it too firm without adding the optional pillow top, which comes affixed and costs an additional $500. The pillow top brings the mattress down to a 6 out of 10 in firmness, making it closer to a true medium, but still on the slightly firmer side.

The Avocado Green mattress is Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) and Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified, which means it has to pass strict organic quality standards for its materials. All materials are organic, natural, and/or non-toxic, and Avocado doesn’t add any synthetic chemicals or polyurethane memory foams. In addition to the organic latex used, Avocado utilizes organic wool that helps with temperature regulation, and the Green has an organic cotton cover that contributes to the mattress’s breathability and makes it a good option for hot sleepers.

The Avocado Green Mattress costs $1,599 for a queen size. This is a bit more than the average cost of all the mattresses in our rating, which is about $1,400, but it’s on par with other hybrid mattresses, which tend to cost a bit more in general. It’s also in line with the price of the Birch Natural Mattress, the only other organic mattress in our rating, which comes in at $1,699. Birch frequently offers discounts of several hundred dollars though. Also, if you’re a side sleeper, you may want to opt for the pillow-top version of the Avocado which adds an extra $500 to the cost of a queen-size Green Mattress. Regardless of the Avocado mattress you choose, shipping is free to all contiguous U.S. states. Before you buy, take advantage of our special discounts on Avocado products.

What Is the Avocado Green Mattress Made Of?

The Avocado Green Mattress contains a layer of 8-inch pocketed coils between layers of Dunlop latex foam.(USN&WR)

The Avocado Green Mattress consists of three main layers – an 8-inch layer of support coils sandwiched between two layers of organic Dunlop latex. It also has an organic cotton cover and wool batting that helps regulate temperature, making it suitable for hot sleepers. The latex layers provide pressure relief and quickly adapt to your body, which is a plus for combination sleepers that switch positions during the night. The coils are divided into five ergonomic zones and contribute additional support and help keep the spine aligned, which can be helpful for preventing back pain. The Avocado Green Mattress is 11 inches tall but totals 13 inches with the optional latex pillow-top.

Avocado Green vs. Birch Natural Mattress

The Birch Natural Mattress(USN&WR)

The Avocado Green Mattress and the Birch Natural Mattress are two organic mattresses that earn top spots in our mattress ratings. With a score of 4.0, the Birch slightly edges out the Avocado, which has a score of 3.9. Both are true hybrid mattresses that are made of layers of organic cotton, wool, and latex on top of individually wrapped springs, but they have some differences when it comes to feel.

The Avocado Green Mattress rates a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale, which puts it at a medium-firm. The optional pillow top adds a bit of plushness, bringing it down to a 6 out of 10, which is a medium on the firmer side. The Birch is a bit softer, coming in at a 6 to 7 out of 10 without any added padding. Birch sells a separate mattress topper that makes the Natural mattress a 4 to 5 out of 10. Because the Birch is softer, it may be a better choice for strict side sleepers, while back and combo sleepers will probably fare better with the Avocado Green.

Avocado Green Mattress vs. The WinkBed Mattress

The WinkBed Mattress(USN&WR)

The Avocado Green Mattress and the WinkBed Mattress tie for No. 8 in our ratings for the Best Mattresses of 2022. While they’re both hybrid models, they have different constructions. The Avocado Green Mattress is constructed of organic wool, cotton, and latex with coils, while the WinkBed is made of gel-infused memory foam and coils. The WinkBed has a bouncier, more traditional feel, which means it has less motion isolation than the Avocado. This makes it a good option for single sleepers who don’t need to worry about being awoken by a partner’s movements, making Avocado a better choice for couples, although it also has a little bounce to it.

While the Avocado comes in one firmness level with the option to add a pillow-top, the WinkBed has four firmness options: Softer (4.5 out of 10), Luxury Firm (6.5), Firmer (7.5), and Plus (8), which is specifically designed for sleepers who weigh 250 pounds or more. All of the options are the same price except for the Plus, which costs $200 more.

How long does an Avocado mattress last?

Avocado Warranty: 25-year warranty

Avocado designs its mattresses to last at least 25 years, which is why each one comes with a 25-year limited warranty. This is one of the longest warranties in our rating, though some companies will cover a mattress for as long as you own it.

Keep in mind: Avocado’s warranty only applies if the claim is made by the original purchaser and if the mattress was bought directly from the company. In qualifying circumstances, the company will replace or repair the mattress for free during the first ten years of the warranty. After this period, the customer must pay a prorated charge, in addition to any shipping or transportation costs.

The warranty covers manufacturer defects, including:

  • Visible sagging of more than 1.5 inches
  • Splits or cracks in the foam
  • Defects in the cover, such as torn fabric or stitching
  • Cosmetic damages that interfere with mattress performance
  • Changes in size measuring more than 2 inches after 30 days of use

Any damages to the mattress caused by misuse are not covered by the warranty. Neither are normal wear and tear, a natural increase in softness, or minor flaws (such as those that don’t impede your ability to use the mattress). Failure to properly care for the mattress can void the warranty. That’s why Avocado recommends placing your mattress on an appropriate foundation, unboxing it within 30 days of receiving it, and rotating the mattress periodically.

How do I return an Avocado mattress?

Avocado Trial Period: One-year sleep trial

To return an Avocado mattress, call customer service during the trial period. Be sure to wait at least 30 days from delivery to initiate a return because Avocado requires one month of testing to ensure you have had time to get used to the new mattress. Avocado’s one-year sleep trial is above average, with most other mattress companies offering 120 days to test out your new mattress.

Once you’ve called Avocado customer service, it will arrange for pickup and donation of your old mattress. There is no shipping or restocking fee, and the full cost of the mattress will be refunded to you. However, any optional add-ons you may have purchased, such as in-home delivery and setup fees, will not be refunded.

How long does it take for an Avocado mattress to expand?

Once you unbox your Avocado mattress and remove the plastic wrap, it will take a few hours to expand to its full dimensions. You do not have to wait this long to sleep on the mattress, which will be ready to use after about 30 minutes. As for unpacking the mattress, we were able to open and unroll a queen-sized Avocado Green in about seven and a half minutes.

You may notice the corners of your mattress expanding more slowly than the center. You can speed up this process by lifting the corners at their edges and shaking them out. The mattress might also show wrinkles from being compressed, even after it’s reached its full height. However, these should disappear after a few days.

Do Avocado mattresses smell?

No, Avocado mattresses do not smell. Some mattresses can give off chemical odors as they expand, known as “off-gassing.” These smells are caused by volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, often found in polyurethane. Because Avocado mattresses are 100% organic and chemical-free, off-gassing is not an issue. As other users have reported, we noticed a not-unpleasant “earthy” or “hay” smell that goes away after about a day.

Do Avocado mattresses need a box spring?

Avocado mattresses do not require a box spring. Avocado recommends placing your mattress on a solid foundation or platform bed with slats placed 5 inches apart or less. While you can use a box spring under an Avocado Green Mattress, you should note that Avocado mattresses contain a specific, five-zone spring system, so placing the mattress on a box spring will slightly alter the feel. If you are using a solid base, Avocado recommends placing the mattress on a coconut pad. Otherwise, the platform will block airflow and potentially create more heat than you’d like at night. The porous coconut fiber mat creates a small amount of space for air to circulate.
