'I love you dad': Antony Blinken reveals the death of his 'inspirational' father Donald, 96, and says the former US diplomat and banker 'gave me a wonderful life'

Antony Blinken has revealed the death of his 'inspirational' father Donald, 96, and said the former US diplomat and banker 'gave me a wonderful life.'

The secretary of state, who has been attending the annual UN General Assembly in New York, announced that his father had passed away in a series of tweets.

Donald Blinken died peacefully at his home in East Hampton, Long Island, a State Department official said. 

Antony, 60, wrote on Twitter: 'My family lost a parent and grandparent, a source of love and inspiration - my father Donald Blinken.

'A member of the U.S. Army Air Corps, a U.S. ambassador, president of the Mark Rothko Foundation, (chairman of the board) of the State University of New York, dad served his city, state and country.

'Dad inspired me to public service. He lived with decency, dignity and modesty. He loved his wife Vera and his family. He built a wonderful life and gave me a wonderful life. I love you dad.'

Due to his father's state of health, Antony canceled several events that he was due to attend at the UN General Assembly Thursday night.

Today's schedule will be adjusted to account for family commitments, the State Department official said.   

Donald was born in New York and served in the Army Air Corps in World War Two.

In 1948, he graduated from Harvard with a degree in Economics, and in 1966, he co-founded the investment banking firm EM Warburg, Pincus & Co.

From 1976 to 1989, Donald was president of the Mark Rothko Foundation.  

Donald had been the chairman of the State University of New York system from 1978 to 1990.

He was the US Ambassador to Hungary from 1994 to 1997, during the Clinton administration.

Donald was given the US Department of Defense Award for Distinguished Public Service.

And he was the first US ambassador to gain the highest civilian honor in Hungary.
